CD Baby is both a shop and a distribution aggregator site. If you join they will put your music onto Amazon, iTunes, Napster and also Spotify.  You can also sell CD’s through CD Baby and not just downloads.  They offer other services such as web design and CD duplication, they will also send you a credit card terminal so you can take credit card payments at your gigs for a $30 deposit (not sure if this works worldwide). Pricing varies but you can expect to pay $35 for worldwide distribution of an album (physical and digital distribution) plus additional costs such as registering a barcode (UPC code). You get between 70-90% of download sales and CD baby take $4 of every CD you sell.

There is no information about how to sell music on the CD Universe site.  They do, however, sell music from CD Baby’s catalogue.

CD Unsigned

CD unsigned will sell your CDs for you. You can create an artists shopfront and sell hard copies of your music. They ask that you send only 5 CDs through to start with and they will request more if needed. It costs a one off registration fee of £19.99.

There is no obvious information on DJ Download about selling music through the site.

eMusic

eMusic require you to work through an aggregator to sell music on their site.  Aggregators CD Baby, DashGo, Foxymelody, M2K M&M, Nimbit, Record Union, Tuncore and Zimbalam distribute to eMusic.

Groupie Tunes

There is no obvious information on HMV’s site about selling music through them.  We will try to find out more in the near future.

IMVU

IMVU is a social network and 3D virtual world!  Aggregator Tunecore distribute music to them.

Independent Music Shops

Many local independent music shops have a policy where they will stock the CDs of local bands.  The best way of finding out if your local independent retailer does this is simply by going in and asking.  The people running them are usually very friendly and also highly knowledgeable about underground music so give it a go.  You’ve got nothing to lose!
