GETTING RIGHT TO THE 'CORE

You first came to our attention through the Certificate 18 Battle of the Bands competition. How have things gone since then?

Psy: We've had our ups and downs since then. We did some cool gigs last year but recently we've had a bit of a break to write some new material and prepare for our next onslaught of gigs.

Cell: We've been writing a load of quite different stuff recently, and so we needed a break to get our thoughts together on where exactly we wanted to go with the music and the band.

512mb: I would say that we've slowed down, our personal circumstances changed which has caused us not to see each other on a more regular basis, but we have been working on some new songs which is really exciting.

Was it worth entering?

Cell: Definitely, we love to play live and its great to play to a more varied audience and get feedback from people that would not usually come out and see us

S73: It was enjoyable, people got to see who wouldn't normally listen to our music, and we made friends with York bands we'd never really spoken to.

512 mb : I’m on the fence with BOTB's as its all which band has the most friends, but its always enjoyable to play in front of a crowd especially when you leave them in a state of "What the ......"

Psy: Botb's can go either way but luckily this one was loads of fun. We got to build on our local reputation and convert more followers to our cause. The final was a great show - the venue was absolutely packed.

What’s going on for Digicore in 2009?

512mb: I would like see us doing more gigs again round the country, and hopefully a lot more new songs.

Psy: Fear not, we're releasing our next album this year and should be doing the rounds with some gigs.

What’s the scene like in York?

Psy: The York scene is quite interesting, but for all the wrong reasons. If it isn't currently 'trendy' or you don't have a hoard of mates, no-one wants to see it. York isn't quite big enough to support any underground scenes. Leeds is a much better bet.

Cell: Quiet - its really difficult to keep the attention of current York gigwatchers atm as the general enthusiasm about the local scene seems to have disappeared.

512mb: Someone on Radio 1 on the unassigned night had a guy on from a local York music mag and he said York had a healthy music scene, he couldn't have been more wrong. Its a very strange place, no one ventures out to see bands play.

S73: In all honesty, it's the people who used to be into the music scene who don't frequent it anymore, it seems to be

the younger kids, so right now, it seems to be predisposed towards the indie emo-kids.

Is it an easy place to play?

Psy: In the current storm of musical apathy, no. But it used to be a blast.

S73: With the right crowd, definitely, the only problem is pulling the people in in the first place.

512mb : No, I hate to say it but I don’t think its all to do with the people, there’s no promotion about to push bands to bring in the crowds.
