Things have been moving really fast for Rubella. With their energetic, attitude packed brand of punk we can’t see that changing soon. With the likes of the BBC and XFM among others sitting up and taking notice it seems pretty certain they’re about to take the world by storm!
How did you meet and go on to form the band?
Noush: Lisa and me were at school together a couple of years ago in Singapore and we made friends when we played in the same school band, which was really fun. We mostly played soft rock ballads though!
Lisa: We were one of the most famous school bands in Singapore at the time because we reached the final of a national competition. But Noush and I decided to study abroad so we moved to London together.
Gems: I’d been playing in a few bands since moving to London from Brighton, but had recently split my band up by sleeping with the guitar player. Then I met the girls on the internet.
You’ve been together since Autumn ’08 yet have experienced a lot. What’s been the Rubella highlight so far?
Lisa: Playing with Noush since Singapore and now in London. And maybe soon in Paris and Japan.
Gems: Playing the Barfly in Camden, jumping off the stage, rolling around and discussing the merits of various fuzz pedals with Pop from The Chapman Family.
Noush: Being played on Xfm and Radio 6 and other radio stations was really cool, and being interviewed by Nemone. Hanging out with Gems and Lisa and being good friends.
How did the Nemone Radio 6 interview come about?
Gems: A very special friend of ours introduced us to the folks at 6 Music...
Noush: Nemone had been playing our track ‘Napalm’ for a week or two.
Lisa: And we were in the Lunchbox...
Gems: Nemone decided to interview a girl band for International Women’s Day and she chose us.
Lisa: Because we are cute and we can play...
Noush: So she called me up and we had a nice chat for five minutes live on air...
What would you like to see happen for Rubella in the next year?
Lisa: We want to be signed by Sony... Then we can play all over the world.
Gems: I want to play Glastonbury and more festivals, definitely.
Noush: I would like to play more gigs and release more material. And write some more really cool songs. It would be good to release an album at some point. We are discussing some possibilities with our contacts in Taiwan but it’s at a very early stage.
You worked with Paul Tipler (Elastica/Forward Russia) on your first recordings. What was the experience like?
Noush: It was a good experience, a lot of fun, hard work and in the end we were really pleased with the recordings. It was a pretty intense couple of days.
