Gems: I read a lot of strange articles in his random collection of National Geographic and Bizarre magazine.
Lisa: He is a professional producer. I like the fish & chips near there.
Noush: They were rather good.
Do you have plans to release anything in the near future?
Gems: We do indeedy. We were back in the studio only the other weekend laying down two fresh new babies for you. For everyone who was enjoying ‘Napalm’ the next one is going to be even better...
Noush: That one’s called ‘Arbeit’. It’s the natural follow-up to ‘Napalm’ in many ways. We are also vaguely planning to release a song in Asia at some point and do a mini-tour. We have been invited back to Singapore, Indonesia...
Lisa: Yeah. We are going to Taiwan early next year for a special release of our song Plastic Implosive. We have the director Daoming Si on board – he’s making a video of us in Taipei.
Noush: I can’t wait to go to Taiwan, it’ll be really cool. We can tell you more about Plastic Implosive later...
Where do you get your inspiration?
Noush: Try to imagine Apocalypse Now crossed with Teen Vogue.
Gems: Can I just put Courtney Love?
Lisa: The Spirit Carries On, by Dream Theater.
What’s your dream collaboration?
Lisa: I want to be sponsored by Sabian...
Gems: I need a pedal board and a Boss hyper-fuzz pedal.
Noush: I want to learn to play Hawaiian steel guitar, it has a really authentic sound.
What’s been the audience reaction to your live performances?
Noush: Really positive overall.
Gems: We’ve got groupies.
Lisa: They all love Noush.
Noush: People find us interesting I guess. We get a good response not just from guys but from girls in particular, which is really important to us and means a lot.
Do you think this is different because you are an all female band?
Gems: Yeah, we have vaginas...
Noush: Some people are surprised when they realise we’re actually a good band. That we can play our instruments and we write good songs. And that’s maybe because it’s so unusual for girls to actually have any genuine sense of self-esteem. But that’s only because there aren’t enough good bands with intelligent girls in.
Lisa: I agree with Rubella. Forever and ever.
What are you listening to at the moment?
Lisa: I listen to Rubella every day.
Gems: What?
Lisa: It’s true.
Noush: I just play my guitar every day and write songs. If I listen to other music it’s in the background. So I listen to a lot of exotica, tropical and Hawaiian music, mainly hapa haole. It's what I listen to when I do my homework. The Hawaiian slack-key style has actually influenced how I tune the strings on my guitar when I play with Rubella, although obviously not the picking style.
You can hear Rubella on http://www.myspace.com/rubella and you get chance get out there and see them live. They’re about to take the world by storm!
