Sample the best new talent

After our recent review of their awesome debut album “13 Arcane Hymns” (and apparently we’ve not heard the final mix yet!) we knew we had to revisit this great band from Calgary, Canada.  The Unravelling craft their own intense brand of intelligent brutality that they punctuate with moments of effortless, melodic lucidity.  The end product is a band that is definitely going somewhere and they know exactly how they’re going to get there.  We grabbed a few words as they prepared for the imminent release of “13 Arcane Hymns”.

How did you meet and go on to form the band?

Steve Moore: Gus contacted me via email after hearing some of my previous material, asking if I'd like to try some vocals/lyrics on music he'd been writing. The first few songs I heard (one of which would become "Becoming Chaos") were very impressive and I was confident my voice would suit the project, and also that I could really express myself within the melodies and moods Gus was putting together. It turned out he had a huge amount of material, so once we connected and things worked out, we recorded constantly and went through the songs we felt would be the most potent. Potency is key.

Gus De Beauville: Wow Steve, I love the way how trusted colleagues such as yourself help keep my hazy recollections of critical facts intact. I would have no sooner have said that we met in an Absinthe house in New Orleans and bonded over our shared love of authentic cajun crawfish recipes, but then again the internet thing does sound vaguely familiar so I'll have to agree with that one..... we met over the internet - kinda creepy aint it?

What’s been the highlight for The Unravelling so far?

Steve Moore: Thus far it's been a studio project but it's been a thrill seeing the music evolve and having each song elevated by live drums (performed by Casey Lewis of The Evidence), and the re-recording of guitars, bass and vocals. The reviews and press coverage thus far has been overwhelming, and we're genuinely excited to come in the back door, so to speak, and surprise a lot of people.

Gus De Beauville: The journey has been the highlight for me so far - This project has been an ongoing process of creation, growth, scrutiny and art for art's sake. Becoming more comfortable with the tools and instruments that we use to make the music and trying to find our unique musical voice in this age of limited attention spans has been quite rewarding. Not only that, but I'm honoured that people such as yourselves have been contacting us with positive comments on the music even though it is still in its demo stages. This validation really digs spurs into our sides to carry on doing what we do and make the record something to be proud of and enjoyed. You cannot believe how cool this really makes us feel as artists. I can only imagine what will happen when our true macabre visions come to fruition on the live stage.

You’ve just completed your album, 13 Arcane Hymns. Who did you work with on this project?

Steve Moore: We're almost done, actually. Primarily it has been Gus writing the guitars, bass, keyboards and drum programming as well as doing the production side of things. I would study the tracks, sometimes for weeks, and write lyrics, vocals and harmonies.
